Wind Power Outside of Rockfish

The Rockfish is a 145 seat full service restaurant and bar located at 400 Sixth Street in Annapolis, Md. In the winter of 2007 we purchased 1,140,000 kWh of wind power RECs (renewable energy credits) over the next 3 years. Our purchase offsets 2,407,680 pounds of green house gasses, 22,308 pounds of sulfur dioxide, 4,838 pounds of nitrogen oxides, and 34,396 milligrams of mercury.

Eastport Eatery Joins Movement To Support Renewable Energy
The Rockfish has also begun a program called “Rockfish Recycles”. Businesses are not offered any recycling program through the Anne Arundel County government. It would cost us over $6,000 a year to recycle through our current waste management company. Understanding that some small businesses in our community can not afford this expense, and with the belief that this service should be free, “Rockfish Recycles” began in the early spring. Our program provides neighboring businesses that were not recycling at all with recycle containers to keep on site. Every Friday, the 12 businesses who now work with us drop off their waste in our parking lot. We sort it, pack it and deliver it to the county’s recycling center free of charge. Current estimates show that we are converting 4 tons of trash bound for landfills to recycle every month. That is almost 50 tons each year and the program keeps growing.

Energy Star The Rockfish's Dining Room
Understanding that restaurants are the number one user of electricity in the country (according to E.P.A. estimates) we are currently replacing our 311 75 watt bulbs to 14 watt energy star bulbs. This has brought kWh of lighting from 233,250 to 4,354 annually. This is an additional elimination of 483,428 pounds of green house gasses, 4,479 pounds of sulfur oxides, and 971 pounds of nitrogen oxide every year.

Renewable Resources
Our restaurant also puts a focus on our products. We have taken great measures to use sustainable seafood throughout our menu. Our partnership with Profish (our primary seafood supplier) allows us to fill the majority of our menu with such items, thus refusing to support fishing practices that are harmful to species populations or the ecology of local waterways. We have also featured organic wines on our 80 plus bottle wine list and have held tasting in the restaurant that are both free to the public and which feature seminars about the steps people can take to green their homes or businesses.

The Garden Come see us
Whether you are looking for a casual meal, a business luncheon or dinner, Sunday brunch, or a special night out, The Rockfish will exceed your expectations.

Finally, we have built and use 80 square feet of organic herb and vegetable gardens that now sit atop our roof at The Rockfish.

It is our hope that in the coming year we can continue to minimize waste by improving cleaning, paper and plastic products in the restaurant and exploring other energy saving products like building insulation and kitchen equipment with the ultimate goal of becoming a zero waste business.
